What is a Gerber file?

In electronics, a Gerber file is a standard file format used to describe the layout of printed circuit boards (PCBs). These files contain detailed information about each layer of the PCB, including copper traces, solder masks, silkscreen, and other elements necessary for PCB manufacturing and assembly.
The Gerber format is essential in the PCB manufacturing process because it allows for the precise transmission of the design created by engineers to manufacturers. These files are generated by PCB design software such as Altium Designer, Eagle, KiCad, and other similar programs.
A typical set of Gerber files for a PCB may include:
  • Files for copper traces: Describe the outlines and connections of copper on each layer of the PCB.
  • Files for solder masks: Indicate the areas on the PCB that will be covered with a protective mask, leaving only the pads for soldering exposed.
  • Files for silkscreen: Contain information about the text and graphics that will be printed on the PCB, such as component names, logos, and other markings.
  • Files for the solder paste layer: Used in the solder paste printing process, specifying where the solder paste should be applied on the PCB.
In addition to Gerber files, other files are required to manufacture a PCB, such as the drill file, which indicates the location and size of the holes to be drilled in the PCB.
The use of Gerber files is critical in ensuring that the final PCB will match the original design, thus allowing for precise and efficient production of printed circuit boards.
